Co-hosts of Good Landlording, Richard Jackson and Suzanne Smith chatting on a sofa

Meet the co-hosts of Good Landlording, Richard Jackson and Suzanne Smith. They are both NRLA accredited landlords who have worked in large multi-national companies at senior levels, and bring their expertise in law and technology respectively to their businesses as landlords in England, and the Good Landlording podcast.

The origins of the Good Landlording podcast

Suzanne and Richard met at an NRLA focus group in January 2024. They got talking about being a landlord, and Richard invited Suzanne onto a couple of webinars on his YouTube channel for Alphaletz, a property management software company that he founded, to talk about the practical implications of rental reform for landlords in England.

The webinars received excellent feedback, as they were a bit different from the normal property investing webinars. Although there are many, many podcasts and YouTube channels for landlords and property investors, none of them discuss the nuts and bolts of being a landlord. What we need to do once we actually own rental properties, to successfully navigate the issues that inevitably arise.

Building on the success of Suzanne’s blog, The Independent Landlord, which provides practical advice for landlords in long form blog posts, and Richard’s experience at Alphaletz, they decided at the beginning of March 2024 to set up a podcast together to discuss the issues that good landlords face.

After struggling to come up with a name that encapsulated what they were trying to achieve together, Richard came up with the idea of “Good Landlording”. They snapped up the .com domain name, it was all systems go to release the trailer by the end of March and the first full episode in April 2024.

Introducing your co-hosts

Richard Jackson

Richard has a large and successful portfolio of buy to let properties, which he built up during his 25-year long career in senior leadership positions in large high-tech and software companies in the UK and Silicon Valley.

His years as a portfolio landlord highlighted a gap in the market for quality software tailored to DIY landlords managing and expanding their buy-to-let property portfolios. This was the inspiration behind Alphaletz, which he co-founded and of which he is the CEO and driving force.

Drawing on his experience at tech industry industry giants like NVIDIA and Citrix, Richard understands the impact of technology and how it can deliver immense value to its users.

As an active landlord, Richard is keenly involved in his own property portfolio, while also engaging daily with fellow landlords in their use of Alphaletz.

With this wealth of knowledge, there is plenty to share on the Good Landlording podcast!

Suzanne Smith

Suzanne has a small portfolio of buy to let houses, which she bought after 25 years as a senior lawyer in multi-national British and American biotech companies. She manages them herself.

As Suzanne had been unable to find high quality, practical content for self-managing landlords, she decided to set up The Independent Landlord blog in August 2022 to share what she had learned, to pay forward and help other landlords.

The Independent Landlord is now one of the leading independent blogs in the private rented sector, with many thousands of active subscribers.

Suzanne is a founder member of OSB Group’s Landlord Leaders Community, which is focused on creating a fairer and more sustainable private rented sector. She is also on the tribunal team for Propertymark’s disciplinary panel.

Having written well over 200,000 words on being a landlord, Suzanne also has plenty share on the podcast!
